The throttle potentiometer supplies a signal to the ECU, after which a correction or adjustment of the ignition curve is made. So it is a kind of sliding contact which transmits a changing resistance value to the ECU / ignition unit. The sensor is subject to high stress and wear, eventually leading to incorrect ignition resulting in poor performance, misfiring or even total failure of the ignition system.
