2.3 Other hazards
VRLA battery Mechanical: VRLA batteries can be heavy. Correct handling techniques and/or mechanical lifting aids (e.g., forklifts) must be used.
Electrical: VRLA batteries can contain large amounts of electrical energy, which can cause very high discharge currents and severe electric shock if the terminals are short-circuited.
Chemicals:
- The VRLA battery does not pose any chemical hazards during normal operation, provided the recommendations for handling, storage, transportation, and use are followed.
- VRLA batteries emit hydrogen gas, which is highly flammable and can burn at approximately 4% to 76%. This can be ignited by a spark at any voltage, open flames, or other ignition sources.
- If the battery is damaged and the internal components are exposed, hazards may exist that require special attention.
